Frankie awoke to the scent of fresh coffee and something delicious cooking. The growl from her stomach was enough to convince her to get up and stumble into the kitchen.

“What time is it?” she asked.

Dante looked up from the paper. “Just gone six.”

Josh was working away at the hob but he didn't turn around as she entered.

“I'm going to wash up,” she said, heading upstairs to the bathroom. She returned a few minutes later, face and teeth cleaned and wearing a fresh, but very similar outfit.

“Did I miss anything?” she asked, sitting at the table opposite Dante.

“The house fire made the lunchtime news. No details on how it started and they hadn't found the human bodies yet. You pretty much destroyed the house.”

Josh placed a mug of coffee in front of her.

“Thank you,” she said, taking a long sip. “So... The people in there, the humans... They were really already dead?” She looked into Dante's eyes, daring him to lie to her.

“Long dead; they were cold.”

He seemed sincere so she let it go.

“I see you finished the washing,” she gestured to the clean clothes they were wearing.

Dante smirked. “Domesticated vampires, they're all the rage. Still,” he stuck his finger through one of the tears in his shirt. “I think I need to brush up on my darning skills.”

“I think that shirt is beyond saving, even with my sewing skills.”

Dante closed the paper and leaned back. “Really? You don't strike me as the domesticated type.”

“Oh, I'm a whiz on the sewing machine,” it was Frankie's turn to smile. “I used to make a lot of my own clothes,” she explained. “Hardly anyone touches a roll of cloth but up to a dozen different people can handle an item of clothing, the cutting, stitching, plus different people tend to make different parts, then there's the people who pack them up and the shop staff who unpack them.”

“I'd never even considered that clothing could hold memories but now that you mention it, it seems obvious. But you said 'used to', what do you do with your clothes now?”

“I don't have a lot of time for sewing these days so I buy them, but I buy them a long time in advance. The impressions generally aren't strong, especially since so much is automated these days. I choose items that don't have strong impressions to begin with and after a few washes and about a year, the stored memories have faded.”

“That makes it hard to be spontaneous.”

Frankie shrugged off his remark. “Anyway, it should be dark soon, your car is parked on Lower Granton Road if you want to get a change of clothes.”

Dante looked out of the window. “The sun's low enough, it's probably safe now.” He looked between Josh and Frankie, as though deciding if he should leave them alone or not. “I may as well go now; the sooner I get it, the sooner we'll be out of your hair.”

“The keys will be under the driver’s seat.”

Suddenly alone with Josh, Frankie was at a loss for words.
